NMES
Neuro-Muscular Electrical Stimulation

.

What is NMES

  • NMES is used to provide sensory and motor input while the child is engaged in a motivating, goal directed activity.

  • Unused or weak muscle is stimulated intermittently through a remote switch at the time that the muscle would normally be used.

  • The therapist must determine which muscle or muscles are needed to assist the child with the selected activity.

  • NMES can be used on the trunk, legs and arms to promote strength, motor planning and allow development of new motor skills.

Clinical Applications for NMES

  • Increases sensory awareness
  • Increases joint range of motion
  • Improves postural alignment
  • Increases muscle strength
  • Decreases spasticity
  • Provides additional support to a structure needing orthotics
  • Assists in gait training
  • Assists with grasp and release activities

NMES Research

  • Current research supports the fact that spasticity is not as much a direct result of neurological injury but due to disuse or overuse stereotyped movement patterns.

  • Research now indicates that spastic muscles are weak, NMES can be used along with traditional treatments to help strengthen weak muscles, leading to decreased spasticity.

  • Research also supports that postural muscles in children with neurological deficits have decreased slow fatigue fibers needed for postural control.  These fibers can be developed by using NMES.

NMES Facts

  • NMES can bring results with only a slight contraction.  This input can influence functional changes.

  • NMES with a remote trigger switch can often enable the therapist to facilitate the muscle at or near the appropriate timing during an activity.

  • With NMES, the child does not need to work excessively and put themselves at risk for facilitation of unwanted movement.

Getting Evaluated

Rehab Resources - Sheboygan has experienced therapists that can determine if NMES can help decreased spasticity, facilitate normal muscle tone, promote coordination and balance, and promote gross and fine motor developmental skills.

Form more information or a complete evaluation for therapy services please call (920) 208-9648 for an appointment.
