Current research supports the fact that spasticity is not as much a direct result of neurological injury but due to disuse or overuse stereotyped movement patterns.
Research now indicates that spastic muscles are weak, NMES can be used along with traditional treatments to help strengthen weak muscles, leading to decreased spasticity.
Research also supports that postural muscles in children with neurological deficits have decreased slow fatigue fibers needed for postural control. These fibers can be developed by using NMES.
