Body Weight Supported Gait Training

What is BWS-GT?     Who Benefits from BWS-GT?
How Can a Child Get an Evaluation?

Research

  • Research has shown that promoting the normal pieces of walking including speed, normal step length, full hip extension, upright posture and heel off at the end of the step can trigger more automatic control for walking.

  • BWS-GT is used to help a child develop normal components of control for walking.  Research has shown that this type of assisted walking can lead to improved functional control.

How Does BWS-GT Benefit the Child?

  • Walking using more upright posture will help the child develop better control in their head, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles.

  • The Lite Gait® system allows for movement without the fear of falling.

  • The treadmill adds a stimulus for enforcement of timing, symmetry and rhythmicity.  This combination produces a very intensive therapy program that can be tailored to each child’s needs.

BWS-GT is a tool that is used in combination with facilitation and traditional therapy intervention
as well as home carryover.

The Lite Gait ® is used over the treadmill, allowing therapist and parent to assist their child in stepping at a normal speed, using normal walking patterns.

Candidates for BWS-GT
  • Non-ambulators working on trunk and stepping control
  • Patients using short step length
  • Patients with good joint mobility and alignment
  • Patients with ataxic walking
  • Patients who have decreased strength in trunk and/or legs

Getting Evaluated

Rehab Resources of Sheboygan has the Lite Gait® as well as a calibrated treadmill, allowing the therapist to set an appropriate speed to allow assisted stepping.

Using this system of therapeutic intervention is aimed at facilitating and producing a normal gain pattern either active or passive.
